Go on a Seed Hunt

Gather:

  1.     Common edible fruit like strawberries, kiwi, apples, oranges, pears, seeded watermelon, tomatoes, cantaloupe, cucumbers, string beans, etc (Enough so each child can have at least a piece)

  2.     Cutting implement for adult use

Explore:

Allow the children to see, touch and smell the fruit. Explain that a seed grows into a new plant. Ask them to look for seeds.

Notice that strawberries have seeds on the outside. Where are the seeds for an orange or an apple? Gently cut open the fruit for the child. Let them find the seeds. Allow the child/children to feel the seeds if they are old enough to not put them in their mouth (some seeds could be a choking hazard to the very young).

Make a fruit salad and/or let them taste the fruit. Cut the apple in half through the middle instead of end to end. Does the pattern of seeds look like a star?

Repeat with different kinds of fruit over time, if desired.
