Seed Investigation (Observing Skills, Graphing)

Gather:

  1.     Common edible fruits from the kitchen like strawberries, kiwi, apples, oranges, pears, watermelon, tomatoes, cantaloupe, bell pepper, avocado, peas etc

  2.     Cutting implement

  3.     Paper and pencil to record results

Explore:

Find the seeds in common examples of fruit. Cut open the fruit, if necessary.

Draw each example and indicate where you find the seed or seeds.

Count and write down how many seeds you find in each kind of fruit. Do some fruit have more seeds than others? Count the number of seeds in five samples of each type of fruit and then plot the average on a graph.

Expanding:  We call tomatoes and cucumbers vegetables, but they are really fruit. Do you know why? Botanists (people who study plants) define a fruit as a ripened ovary, which means it is the part of the plant that makes the seeds. Vegetables are the roots, stems and leaves of a plant.
